Summer with SquashEmpower

After Pizza party break-ups for the academic year, Summer squash continues for SquashEmpower. Three CCCS students received part scholarships to Bethesda Sport & Health Junior Squash camps with former world #9 Mohamed Awad (pictured left with Nnamdi and right with Mike). Sports Club/LA DC has generously opened its doors to the SquashEmpower students and several of the kids will be continuing training over summer with volunteer coach, Matt Rosser. Thanks also to SquashEmpower Board Member, Hunt Richardson for facilitating the Summer program.

US Mens Selection Event

Julian Illingworth (pictured right) continued his impressive rise triumphing in the 2006 US Men’s selection event held at Worldgate S&H by enduring four sets (7,(2),2,1) and 70 minutes of punishing squash with Cincinnati’s Jamie Crombie (below with Connie). The brilliant final capped a financially successful weekend, which also gave a spiritual lift to the Washington area squash lovers who attended. The tournament netted almost $3,000 dollars for SquashEmpower. A DVD of the final is available on application. At www.aussienicksquash.com you can link to a preview which shows one of the longer rallies of the match. Thank-you to our major sponsors - ASTi, Kodiak , AussieNick and FRC Marketing, as well as those who attended the event and purchased auction items. Special thanks to Sport & Health Clubs for the tremendous Community support it showed by providing the courts and for its outstanding marketing of the tournament.

PSA Event in February 2007

SquashEmpower will be holding a $10,000 PSA Event in February 2007. The event should lure some of the world’s premier touring pros to the DC area. Included in the activities will be Play the Pro and clinic sessions with the players. If you are interested in providing sponsorship for this fantastic occasion, please contact Connie.

Working at George Washington University commencing Fall

For the next academic year SquashEmpower will be working with the School Without Walls located on the GWU Campus. The courts at GWU are excellent quality and this, combined with the many students and the GWU Squash teams who have expressed an interest in volunteering, bodes well for a fantastic future program!

As part of the September fund raising activities SquashEmpower is holding a hardball tournament at Tenley Sport and Health. This will be a USSRA sanctioned event with the profits from the weekend going entirely to the charity. Entry forms available August/September.
