Julian Illingworth continued his impressive rise triumphing in the 2006 US Men’s selection

Julian Illingworth continued his impressive rise triumphing in the 2006 US Men’s selection event held at Worldgate S&H, enduring four sets (7,(2),2,1) and 70 minutes of punishing squash with Cincinnati’s Jamie Crombie. The brilliant final capped a financially successful weekend, which also gave a spiritual lift to the Washington area squash lovers who attended. The final figures are not in, but it appears the tournament netted several thousand dollars for its charity beneficiary SquashEmpower. DVD’s of the Illingworth v Crombie match are available on application from www.aussienicksquash.com . Proceeds go to SquashEmpower. The event raised $3,000 for SquashEmpower. Thank-you to our major sponsors - ASTi, Kodiakand FRC Marketing, as well as those who attended the event and purcahesd auction items.

Summer at SquashEmpower

After Pizza party break-ups for the academic year, Summer squash continues for SquashEmpower. Three CCCS students received part scholarships to Bethesda Sport & Helath camps with Mohamed Awad (former #9 PSA Champion). SC/LA DC has opened its doors to the SquashEmpower students over summer and several of the kids will be continuing training over summer with volunteer coach, Matt Rosser.

SquashEmpower to run National Men's Trial for first time in DC Area

For the first time in its prestigious history, the US Men’s Squash Team Selection event will be held in the DC area. Sport and Health Management, ASTi and SquashEmpower have worked to secure the event for Worldgate S&H. From June 8 – 11, the best players in the US will be vying for a spot to represent their country internationally – this will be four days of some of the most exciting squash you will ever see. SquashEmpower, the DC urban youth enrichment program is coordinating the event and ASTi are the major sponsor. Beside the top quality squash, many activities involving these brilliant players are planned including clinics for juniors and adults at RIO, Regency, Bethesda and Worldgate Sport & Health Clubs, and at Sports Club/LA. There may even be the opportunity to fill the spot with a local player – imagine yourself playing in the US Selection event! Follow the link for information about ticketing and sponsorship packages. This is going to be a terrific week-end, be sure to join in the fun and support a very worthy cause. A raffle and auction will also be held for SquashEmpower.

SquashEmpower Tournament February 2006

It may have been snowing outside but at Bethesda Sport & health 50 local junior players were warming all hearts by competing in the Juniors for Power - SquashEmpower tournament on Feb 11-12. Squash players from Bradley Hills Elementary, Pyle and Westland Middle Schools, The Heights, Walt Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High Schools, and others participated in the tournament which raised funds to send an urban youth program - SquashEmpower - participants to an interstate squash tournament in March. Entry fees and raffles combined to bring in a total of $2,000. The organizers would like to thank Bethesda Sport & Health for their kind support for the program and Madfish Wines for raffle prizes.  Results of the tournament can be found in here. Most pleasing  was the effort of Nnamdi Nwazeapu (pictured second from left in the back row, next to volunteer coach Matt Rosser) from the Capital City Charter School, who won the consolation round of the Boys C grade. Visitors from Wakefield High School, Matt and Robbie Bohn took the boys B and C respectively. Wakefield students play at Worldgate S&H and have done remarkably well with the small amount of court time they have had to date.

Bob Steck on SquashEmpower Weekend
Bob Steck waxes lyrical on the SquashEmpower fundraising weekend, and why it was so important it did well.

SquashEmpower Weekend: Great Success
SquashEmpower held its fundraising weekend 24-25th September, and according to Connie Barnes the weekend was enormously successful and will fund the program through its first full year. Barnes
heaped praise on the invaluable contributions of SE patron Chris Walker, former USSRA CEO Palmer Page, SE 'Volunteer of the Year' Hunt Richardson, and staff at the Embassy of Australia for making the weekend's events a wonderful success. Deputy Mayor Neil Albert was a guest of honor at the Gala and spoke very supportively of the program and its goals.
