Program Goals

  • to support disadvantaged school students in their personal and academic growth

  • to promote diversity in the squash community by reaching an otherwise inaccessible population

  • to provide community outreach to adults and students to act as volunteers for the program

  • Squash

After a brief warm-up and stretch, students are paired with a volunteer coach who teaches them about a particular aspect of the game in a lesson. The instruction ends with the opportunity for each player to apply their learning to an actual game situation. Sessions include a circuit fitness program to improve general fitness level.

  • Tutoring - Academics

Twice a week, SquashEmpower students receive one and a half hours of tutoring that focuses on homework completion, conceptual understanding, concentration, preparation, organization, and time management.  There is a very low ratio of students to teachers.

  • Mentoring
Mentors complement the program by providing additional individual attention to a student. Students meet with their mentors twice per month for one year and participate in a range of activities including rollerblading, playing sport, and getting to know Washington DC.

  • Community Service
Community Service - The goal of Community Service is to have the kids experience the positive feelings and inspiration that goes with serving others and working as a team. Through community service, students will develop pro-activeness and self-esteem.
